The Great Panjandrum
How to breach the "Atlantic Wall"
Fig 3. Panjandrum was supposed to be launched from a landing Craft on D-Day
propel itself up the invasion beach and explode against the defence wall. The idea
was to have up to 1 ton of explosive in a drum between two 10ft diameter wheels
which were driven by slow-burning cordite charges. Nevil Shute was in charge of
the trials in 1943 and early 1944. Steering proved erratic and in the event
Panjandrum was never used.
