Dan spent 24 years in the US Army, followed by founding a small consulting firm, and retiring for good in 1992. As a schoolboy during the "Golden Age of Science Fiction" immediately following WWII, Dan was an avid science fiction/future fiction reader. Like many Shutists of the era, his first exposure to Nevil's writing was "ON THE BEACH". He thought he had discovered a new science fiction author! Despite this initial misunderstanding, he went on to read and reread every book published by Nevil Shute, several as soon as they were published.
In 1998, Dan started a small on-line book club for Shutists. When one of the members mentioned that Nevil's 100th birthday would be January 17, 1999, Dan decided to host a birthday party in Albuquerque, New Mexico. That party turned into the Centennial Celebration, followed by the OZ2001 gathering, the Nevil Shute Norway Foundation, The Newsletter, the Web Site, the OZ, UK, and US Libraries, and the tradition of conducting biennial international gatherings
Dan served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Foundation from its inception to January, 2008 and, after a brief respite from Foundation duties, assumed the positions of Vice President and Chief of Staff in October 2008.
Dan and his wife Zia share their home in The Land of Enchantment with Nevil, Kokopelli (the German Shepherd) and a series of Labrador puppies that Zia trains as assistant dogs for Canine Companions for Independence.
